26 Ways to Be Creative

Hello! Sorry for the week off, I was out in California last week for my birthday. It was a fantastic trip, with great people, awesome food, and gorgeous long car drives. It was perfect for unplugging…which meant I wasn’t writing a blog post.

Last time I wrote about the myths we have about creativity. If you didn’t read it, the myths we tell ourselves about creativity hold so many of us back from being creative. The truth is anyone and everyone has the ability to be creative.

The next question becomes, how do you unleash your own creativity? Where can you start?

I could tell you there’s one thing you must do…but that would be lying. In honor of my 26th birthday, I’ve created a list (with the help of a few friends) to help you get started.

1. Make your own homemade play dough. This great site has some tips not only for making the dough but also creating your own colors. It’s a treat for kids of all ages.

2. Doodle or create your own doodling book

Simple, easy, and a great way to unwind

3. Make music from objects in your house (I knew someone that taught herself how to play the saw!)

4. Create your own greeting cards for a birthday or special life event

5. Make a garden out of random items like a wheelbarrow or old glass bottles

6. Turn your TV on mute and lip sync for the characters on TV

7. Dance (audience not required)

8. Go to a busy public place like a coffee shop or public park. Make up stories about the people you see. Where are they going? Who are they going to meet? Where are they from? This is great fun with a friend or just writing it down in a journal.

9. Get out of the house with a photo scavenger hunt. Come up with a list of items or people to find. Split up into teams. Whoever finds the most items on the list wins! Everyone gets to enjoy the hilarious photographs.

10. Go to a thrift store and find a whole outfit for under $35.

11. Write a story with a balloon, a jail break, and a teddy bear.

12. Create a birdhouse with found objects

13. Try a conversation drawing. Grab a pad of paper and sharpie pens. Each person gets to use one color. Once a person puts down the pen, their turn is done.

14. One line stories: Each person gets to write one line and then passes. You’ll find these story go in surprising directions!

15. Have a digital camera? Create a stop motion film.

16. Buy some paints from the dollar store and finger paint.

17. Get a disposable camera and scratch the lens, take photos and then develop! You could get some great photos like this:

18. Make a little luxury for yourself: Create your own salt scrub with your favorite scents. It’s an easy way to treat yourself over and over again.

19. Give your old newspapers and magazines a new life as a collage.

20. Write a letter to your younger or future self.

21. Have a themed dinner part. Up the ante for invitees with a contest for the best outfit. You can get wild with themes and see how creative your friends can be!

22. Learn how to make origami. I just learned how to make origami cranes. It’s relaxing and beautiful.

23. Take a close up shot of something from your daily life. This is called macrophotography, and can reveal a whole new perspective of things you use everyday!

24. Remember shadow puppets? It’s not just dogs and birds anymore, but foxes, human faces, even deer.

25. Lost your baking hat? Here’s a cake anyone can make (no oven required).

26. Are you a night owl? Go star gazing and create your own constellations.

These are just some the ways you can let loose and be creative. Let loose, have fun. Creativity is about process, not product.
